It’s 6am on a Sunday morning. The afters is at a punter’s place, their folks are out of town. You roll out of The Dome on Commercial Road in Melbourne Australia with the crew, jump on the tram and head to Flinders Street before catching the Pascoe Vale train. You walk down Gaffney Street, following the distant sound of music until you see a guy in a tutu dancing in the front yard.
Inside, the night is still alive. Then, as Orbital’s Halcyon + On + On begins to play, the sky outside starts to fill with shades of purple, red and orange. The sun rises, the track builds and when the drop finally hits, for a moment, everything is perfect.1998 is a homage to what I consider one of the best periods of my life. A time when 909s, 808s and 303s, intertwined with minor keys, became part of my aural world. When standing in the middle of a warehouse and hearing a DJ drop the next great underground track could send you straight to the local record store the following day in search of it.For some, those moments happened earlier. For others, much later. But for me, 1998 was the beginning. This track is my way of returning to that moment. A toast to the music, the people, the places and the feeling of discovering something that would stay with me long after the night was over.

Who Is Monolith?
Monolith (Louay Zoghaib) is a Techno/Ambient artist who combines contemporary electronic techniques with traditional music practices. Having a formal background in audio engineering, sound design and classical composition, Louay uses his experiences to create a unique tapestry of sonic textures that appeals both, on and off the dancefloor. This is achieved through Monolith’s improvisational live approach with modular synthesizers and other electronic instrumentation.
Influenced by the melodic sound of early Techno, through to Acid Techno and minimal electronica, Monolith continually pursues new ways technology and creativity can collide to evolve his performances, sound and music. Monolith is a road trip fuelled by the romanticism of Dub Techno, the brittle sparks of minimal electronica and greased with Detroit Techno’s futuristic and melodic anatomy.
